Top 5 Opera To See This Weekend (12/8-10): Anna Netrebko, Adela Zaharia & Jose Cura Lead Star-Studded Weekend

Another weekend is here and many of the biggest stars are performing in some of the greatest theaters. If you want to know where Anna Netrebko, Sonya Yoncheva, Jonas Kaufmann or Piotr Beczala are performing, here is a look at our top five to see this weekend.

“Andrea Chénier”- Teatro Colón, Argentina 

José Cura continues his run of “Andrea Chénier,” one of his signature roles in his home country. The tenor is joined by rising star María Pía Piscitelli in the role of Maddalena while Fabián Veloz sings Carlo Gerrard. Matías Cambiasso directs the production while Christian Badea conducts.

“Dialogues des Carmelites”- La Monnaie Du Mont, Belgium 

Anne Catherine-Gillet stars in Poulenc’s masterpiece Blanche de la Force in a new production by Oliver Py which is a co-production with the Champs-Elysees. Karine Deshayes and Marie-Adeline Henry also star with Alain Altinoglu conducts.

“La Bohème”-Opéra de Paris, France

It may have been booed and panned by the critics but those interested in seeing a radical production, Claus Guth’s “La Bohème” is a must-see. Sonya Yoncheva and Aida Garifullina headline the production, which also stars Atalla Ayan and Artur Rucinski. Gustavo Dudamel conducts.

“Lucia di Lammermoor”- Bayerische Staatsoper, Germany 

For those interested in discovering a new voice, recent Operalia winner Adela Zaharia will make her company debut in the title role of Donizetti’s masterpiece replacing the originally scheduled Diana Damrau. Zaharia has been acclaimed for Lucia and it was with the opera’s mad scene that she won Operalia. She will be joined by Piotr Beczala, Nicolas Teste, and Ludovic Tezier. Antonino Fogliani conducts.

“Andrea Chénier”-Teatro alla Scala, Italy 

Sunday night audiences will get a chance to see Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov in Mario Martone’s new production of “Andrea Chenier” which opened the 2017-18 season. Riccardo Chailly conducts the production, which also stars Annalisa Stroppa and Luca Salsi and received an 11-minute standing ovation.

Bonus: 

If you are not in Italy or Argentina and want to see “Andrea Chénier,” perhaps heading to Germany would be a great idea as Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros are currently performing the work at the Bayerische Staatsoper.
