Every weekend that draws ever closer to Christmas leaves more and more opera companies in hibernation. But there are still some that have plans for you this holiday season.

Otello – Metropolitan Opera

Verdi’s greatest masterpiece gets its opening performance of the season with superstar soprano Sonya Yoncheva as Desdemona. She is joined by Zeljko Lucic and tenor Stuart Skelton in the title role. However, perhaps the reason to see the show is to enjoy the debut of conductor Gustavo Dudamel at the big house on Friday night.

The Lion, the Unicorn, and Me – Washington National Opera

The WNO’s popular holiday opera, with libretto by J.D. McClatchy and music by Jeanine Tesori, makes a return for three nights at the Kennedy Center. Francesca Zambello’s production will be conducted by James Lowe;

Sounds of the Season – Opera Birmingham

Technically not an opera, but it’s the holiday season. This concert, slated for the Brock Recital Hall at Samford University, will take place on Sunday afternoon. Daniel Siegel leads the performance which should get you in the holiday spirit.

La Boheme – Pacific Opera Project

Now in its second weekend, POP’s popular production of La Bohème” gets performances on Friday and Saturday. It’s the perfect holiday opera, even if tragedy does ensue.
