Thomas Hampson Replaced In Verbier Festival’s ‘Elektra’

By David Salazar

Eric Owens will be replacing Thomas Hampson as Oreste in the Verbier Festival 2017’s performance of “Elektra” on July 27, 2017.

Hampson was originally slated to perform the role when the cast was originally announced but has since been replaced by Owens, who has sung the role prominently around the world. He was widely praised for his portrayal at the Metropolitan Opera in 2015-16. “Mr. Owens’s husky body almost sags with the burden of responsibility; his rich, muscular voice is suffused with suffering,” wrote the New York Times of his performance.

The performance also stars Lise Lindstrom in the title role alongside Ingela Brimberg as Chrysothemis, and Anna Larsson as Klytaemnestra.

Esa-Pekka Salonen will conduct the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the performance will be showcased via Livestream. It will later be available for free with a subscription on Medici.tv for three months.

The Verbier Festival is an international music event that takes place annually for two weeks in late July and early August in the mountain resort of Verbier, Switzerland. This year the festival runs from July 21 through August 6, 2017.
