UPDATE: Thomas Hampson Cancels Oviedo Concert

By Francisco Salazar

UPDATE: Hampson posted a message on his Facebook account to clarify his health situation.

“I regrettably announce that I had to withdraw from last Saturday’s performance in Oviedo. Unfortunately, I had an extremely aggravating flu last week following a truly enjoyable Operetta tour with Piotr and Annette, and needed time to recover.

I’ve been looking forward to my debut as Don Alfonso at the Bayerische Staatsoper, one of my favorite opera houses in the world. However, I have put off too long dealing with a bad knee that is no more than bone on bone, the deterioration influenced after being hit by a car five years ago. I will have a complete knee replacement in NY in March, and expect to resume my performance calendar in Munich on April 16. I am also looking forward to singing some gorgeous music by Berg and Strauss on March 2 & 3 with the Stuttgart Philharmonic and Maestro Dan Ettinger, a much admired conductor of the new generation. Later this spring I will return to Heidelberg for the Lied Academy as planned, April 3-12 at the Heidelberg Frühling Festival.

I apologize for any inconvenience or confusion, and my gratitude goes to the colleagues who have had the opportunity to replace my appearances in Oviedo and Munich.”

Thomas Hampson has canceled his participation in an upcoming concert in Oviedo.

According to a press release, the baritone canceled the concert due to a respiratory infection. He was to have performed a program with Olga Peretyatko featuring arias and duets from Verdi’s ‘Macbeth,’ “Rigoletto,” and “La Traviata.”

As a result, Italian baritone Luca Salsi will replace Hampson. The two singers will be accompanied by the Oviedo Philharmonic under the direction of Tung Chieh Chuang and will be held at the Auditorio Príncipe Felipe de Oviedo. The concert is scheduled for Feb. 24.

Hampson recently canceled performances at the Bayerische Staatsoper in “Cosi Fan Tutte.” He is scheduled to return to the stage in March for concerts with Dan Ettinger. He will also hold masterclasses in April as well as a recital in April.
