The Salzburg Festival has announced that it will collaborate for the sixth year with Swarovski for three productions.

The festival announced that Swarovski crystals will be used in productions of “Die Zauberflöte,” “The Queen of Spades,” and “L’incoronazione di Poppea.” In a press release, Nadja Swarovski, a member of the Executive Board stated, “We are proud to continue this partnership, which has now been in effect for six years. The Salzburg Festival and Swarovski share unique levels of tradition, quality, and creativity.”

Meanwhile, festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler noted, “The Salzburg Festival and Swarovski may rightfully consider themselves global players. Both brands are ambassadors of Austrian quality with a worldwide reputation. Therefore, I am particularly happy at Swarovski’s support for the eagerly-awaited opening premiere of the Salzburg Festival, ‘Die Zauberflöte.’ Working with Nadja Swarovski, a woman whose creativity and entrepreneurship seeks and finds partners all over the world, is wonderful.”

Costume designer for “Die Zauberflöte,” joined Jan Meier and Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler in presenting the designs using Swarovski crystals. Among the characters who will use the Swarovski crystals include the Queen of the Night, which is set to be played by Albina Shagimuratova. According to the press release the dress will be embellished with elaborate embroideries and crystals sewn on by hand and she will wear a headdress of crystals and pearls which has been constructed by hand in the costume painting department. “Manufacturing the costume for the Queen of the Night has taken approximately 80 hours; the headdress consumed
about 100 hours and the application of crystals to her dress another 40 hours.”

In Monteverdi’s “L’incoronazione di Poppea,” there will be three elements involving sparkling crystals: Nerone, a role sung by Kate Lindsey, will wear a bodysuit with a skeleton appliqué. The highlight of this production consists of two crowns which will be decorated with stylized snakes depicted using crystals and another worn by Poppea. Nerone’s crown will require ca. 400,000 individual crystals while Poppea’s crown will feature 150,000.
