The Irish National Opera Names Artistic Director

The new Irish National Opera company has named Fergus Sheil its artistic director.

Conductor and opera producer Sheil was formerly artistic director of Wide Open Opera and Opera Theatre. He will be joined by executive director, Diego Fasciati, who has worked with Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Theatre Company, the Arts Council and Rough Magic Theatre Company.

The new company was created as a result of an Arts Council initiative earlier this year. The company was supported by the council with an excess of €2.5 million and will become the council’s second largest client after the Abbey Theatre.

The company also announced that Gavin O’Sullivan will become head of production which Sorcha Carroll will be the new marketing manager and Cate Kelliher will be the finance manager.

The Irish National Opera will open with Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” directed by Patrick Mason. The production will be seen at the National Opera House, Wexford on Friday, April 13, and at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin from Tuesday, April 17 until Saturday the 21. The company will announce its full 2018 season after a gala Big Bang! concert at the National Concert Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
