The 6 Most Exciting Productions Of La Scala’s 2017-18 Season

By David Salazar

La Scala’s 2017-18 season was announced on Wednesday.

As with every major season announcement, there is no doubt that some productions resonate more than others among the legendary house’s upcoming offerings. Here are our most hotly anticipated productions of 2017-18.

Andrea Chénier

There is no doubt that anything Anna Netrebko touches these days almost always turns to gold. And we can’t wait to hear the soprano take on the glorious melodies that Umberto Giordano wrote for Maddalena de Coigny. Netrebko also has solid chemistry with her husband, Yusif Eyvazov, who will play the title role on opening night of this run. Throw in Chailly and this should be quite the event.

Orphée et Eurydice

At this point, anything with Juan Diego Flórez is a must-have. And Juan Diego Flórez in a more delicate and elegant French style seems like the best of all possible worlds. The rest of the cast is also quite compelling, with Christiane Karg taking on Eurydice and Fatma Said as L’Amour.

Fierrabras

“Fierrabras” is no major masterpiece, but the La Scala premiere of this Schubert gem is easily one of the exciting events of the season. While other major companies refuse to bring back major classics from often-overlooked masters, La Scala’s decision to stage the rare opera is a bold move.

But what makes this a slam dunk is the cast, which features Anett Fritsch and Dorothea Röschmann among others.

Il Pirata

Bellini’s rare gem gets new life from a conductor who started his career disliking the composer. But what makes this a must-see is that Sonya Yoncheva will be making her first rounds with this role. The Bulgarian soprano is among the top stars in the opera world and one of her greatest assets is her adventurous nature with repertoire.

Ernani

Ailyn Pérez’s profile in the opera world is on the rise and her decision to step into “Ernani” is an interesting one that shows her flirting with some unexpected Verdian repertoire. Throw in Francesco Meli, one of the great Verdi tenors of today, Simone Piazzola as Don Carlo, and Ildar Abdrazakov as Silva, and this will be one of the top performances to get excited for in 2017-18.

Alì Babà e i 40 Ladroni

This one makes the list because it is an opera few have ever heard of. While it features no major stars (it will be performed by soloists of the Teatro alla Scala Academy of Lyric Opera), the rare Cherubini score is a welcome surprise in a season filled with repertory mainstays.
