Teatro Alla Scala 2017-18 Season: Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov to Open Season

Riccardo Chailly has confirmed that Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov will open the Teatro alla Scala 2017-18 Season.

La Stampa reported that the couple will sing Giordano’s “Andrea Chenier” under the direction of Chailly in a new production from Mario Martone. The opening will mark Netrebko’s role debut as Maddalena.

The article also reported that Chailly will be music director until 2022 and the upcoming seasons will include Bellini’s “Il Pirata” and “I Puritani” in critical editions. It was also revealed that a Alexander Periera, the general manager wanted to continue to revive Puccini and Rossini operas after so many years of ignoring the composers works at La Scala.

Netrebko opened La Scala in 2015 with Verdi’s ”Giovanna d’Arco” and in 2011 with Mozart’s ”Don Giovanni.” The soprano has also performed Puccini’s “La Bohème” with the company and is scheduled to return to Violetta in Verdi’s “La Traviata.”

Eyvazov is currently rehearsing “Andrea Chenier” at the Prague National Opera where he will make his role debut.

La Scala opened its season on Dec. 7. 2016 with Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” with Maria Jose Siri and Bryan Hymel. It is currently presenting Verdi’s “Don Carlo.”
