Tanglewood’s ‘Tosca’ To Feature Metropolitan Opera’s Would-Be Duo

By David Salazar

She won’t be singing “Tosca” at the Metropolitan Opera anymore next season, but Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais is still primed to take on the tragic heroine in the Northeast this summer.

On Saturday, August 26, she will join husband and Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Andris Nelsons in the second Act of Puccini’s famed masterpiece. She will perform alongside Bryn Terfel, who was to be her Scarpia in the upcoming production of the work in New York (he is still scheduled to portray the villain starting on Dec. 31, 2017). Terfel, of course, is stepping in for Dmitri Hvorostovsky, who was previously scheduled to perform in this concert.

As Cavaradossi, audiences won’t get Jonas Kaufmann (who was originally scheduled to sing in New York), but will still get the treat of seeing Russell Thomas.

In addition to the suspenseful second act of Puccini’s work, the Opera Gala program will also feature songs and arias from composers including Smetana, Dvořák, and Mozart.

This announcement comes on the heels of the revelation that Stephanie Blythe would be joining the cast of “Das Rheingold” at Tanglewood, a concert that takes place on July 15, 2017.
