Tanglewood Finds Superstar Replacement For Dmitri Hvorostovsky

By David Salazar

Bryn Terfel will be replacing baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky at Tanglewood Opera Gala on August 26, 2017.

The newly minted Sir will perform alongside soprano Kristine Opolais and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Andris Nelsons will lead the ensemble.

It has been a tough year for Hvorostovsky as the baritone has continued his battle with cancer.  In late September 2016, the Russian artist had to withdraw from his engagements in Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra” at the Vienna State Opera and in December 2016, he canceled his planned debut performances of Verdi’s “Don Carlo” at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater.

A few weeks later he announced that he would not be performing in opera productions for the foreseeable future so he could concentrate on his treatment.

That was followed by cancellations of a highly anticipated revival of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” at the Metropolitan Opera with colleague and close friend Anna Netrebko.

He did, however, perform in a few concerts thereafter, most notably at the Metropolitan Opera 50th Anniversary Gala when he performed an aria from Verdi’s “Rigoletto.”

The baritone currently has no performances scheduled on his website.
