Susan Graham, Patricia Racette the Big Stars of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ 2018 Season

By David Salazar

The Opera Theatre of Saint Louis has announced its 2018 season, which will feature several surprises and some of the world’s greatest opera stars.

The season is slated to run between May 19 and June 24 and will feature Susan Graham making a return to the company as well as the debut of legendary bass-baritone James Morris in Marc Blitzstein’s “Regina.”

That will be followed up by “Orfeo e Euridice,” which will showcase the talents of Jennifer Johnson Cano and Andriana Chuchman as the star-crossed lovers. Maria Valdes will play Amore in the new production by Ron Daniels.

As a part of the company’s “New Works, Bold Voices” series, audiences will get a chance to see “An American Soldier” in its world premiere. The David Henry Hwang opera will feature Andrew Stensen in his OTSL debut, Wayne Tigges, Michael Christie, and Matthew Ozawa.

Patricia Racette’s hotly anticipated directorial debut will take place in Verdi’s “La Traviata.” The great diva will direct Sydney Mancasola in the lead role with Geoffrey Agpalo as Alfredo and Joo Wan Kang as Germont.

“We could not be more excited about these artists and operas,” said General Director Timothy O’Leary in a press release.  “Each of these works is a masterpiece of its kind, from the greatness of Gluck to the brilliance and insight of modern masters like Huang Ruo and David Henry Hwang.  The stories in ‘An American Soldier’ and ‘Regina’ speak powerfully to questions of identity that shape our most meaningful conversations today, just as ‘La Traviata’ and ‘Orfeo’ speak to truths about the human heart that never change.  It is a joy and privilege to work with such astonishing artists – both homecomings to OTSL and exciting debuts.  I’m so thankful to the whole Opera Theatre family for making this possible.”
