Speranza Scapucci Replaces Semyon Bychov At The Vienna Opera Ball

By Francisco Salazar

Speranza Scapucci will conduct the Vienna Opera Ball on Feb. 23.

The Italian conductor will fill in for the originally scheduled Semyon Bychkov, who is ill.

The Italian conductor Scappucci gave her acclaimed debut to the Viennese Staatsoper last autumn and had been a solokorrepetitor at the Vienna State Opera for several years before she started her international career as a conductor.

The Vienna Staatsoper released a statement that said, “She is currently rehearsing with the Sinfonieorchester Basel for a Belcanto gala with Olga Peretyatko and Lawrence Brownlee at the Baden-Baden Festival on the day after the opera ball. Generously, all participants switched their rehearsals so Speranza Scappucci  could participated at the opera ball.”

Scappucci will direct the State Opera Orchestra at the opening of the ball and will conduct Jonas Kaufmann in arias from Bizet’s “Carmen” and Lehar’s “Das Land des Lächelns.”

Following her performances this week, Scapaucci can be seen in Liège, Parma, Florence and Paris.

Bychov is scheduled to return to conducting in March for Wagner’s “Parsifal” at the Vienna State Opera.
