By Francisco Salazar

Sonya Yoncheva will make her role debut as Tosca.

As part of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s 2017-18 season, the Bulgarian soprano will sing her first Tosca in Puccini’s masterpiece under the direction of Yannick Nezet-Seguin. The event will also mark the soprano’s debut with the orchestra.

In a statement for the Philadelphia inquirer Nezet-Seguin said, “I finally got the ‘Tosca’ that I’ve been dreaming about. It’s a Puccini opera that I have not so far conducted complete. … This will be a role debut for Sonya, and something we’ve been talking about even before ‘Otello’ [her Metropolitan Opera breakthrough, conducted by him, in 2015].”

The performances will also include Yusif Eyvazov as Cavaradossi and Ambrogio Maestri as Scarpia.

Yoncheva already has a busy 2017-18 season as she will be starring in a new production of Verdi’s “Don Carlo” at the Opera National de Paris and will revive a production of Verdi’s “Lusia Miller” at the Metropolitan Opera. She will also be taking on the title role of Puccini’s “La Boheme” and the Countess in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” at the Met.

Yoncheva is currently performing a revival of Verdi’s “La Traviata” at the Metropolitan Opera and is scheduled to return to the Baden-Baden Festival for performances of Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito.” She is also scheduled to perform at the Metropolitan Opera’s 50th Anniversary gala.
