By Francisco Salazar

On June 4, 2017, Arte will broadcast Sonya Yoncheva and Piotr Beczala’s New Year’s Eve concert.

The gala, recorded back on December 31, 2016, was conducted by Yoncheva’s husband, Domingo Hindoyan, with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie. The program included duets from Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” and Massenet’s “Manon.” It also included arias from Bizet’s “Carmen” and Franz Lehar’s operettas. There was also a duet from Verdi’s “La Traviata.”

Yoncheva and Beczala are two of the leading singers of their generation. Beczala is currently preparing Léhar’s “Das Land des Lächelns” at the Zürich Opera and later heads to Italy for “La Bohème” before performing Massenet’s “Werther” in Puerto Rico. He also heads to Barcelona for Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” this fall.

Meanwhile, Yoncheva is in the midst of rehearsals for Puccini’s “La Bohème” at La Scala. Later this summer she makes her role debut as Vitellia in Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” in Baden-Baden and then heads to Montpellier to perform Giordano’s “Siberia.” She also sings her first Elisabetta in Verdi’s “Don Carlo.”

The two are set to reunite at the Metropolitan Opera for Verdi’s “Luisa Miller” next spring with Plácido Domingo.
