Smule Reaches Out To Opera Lovers & Lets You Sing Alongside Pavarotti

By David Salazar

Ever dream of singing alongside Luciano Pavarotti?

For many aspiring young singers that would be a dream come true, one that in a literal sense would not be possible. But technology has a knack for making the impossible, somewhat possible, as showcased by Smule, an online network that allows anyone to sing side by side with their favorite artists.

Smule was founded by Jeff Smith, a classically trained pianist and serial entrepreneur whose research inspired him to “use the universal nature of music to connect the world literally by creating a series of user-generated musical applications for mobile.”

“Unlike other social networks where social connection comes first and content sharing second, with Smule collaborative content creation comes first and the social fabric is woven from those co-creations,” Kevin Carson, Senior Vice President of Global Artists and Industry Relations, told OperaWire.

While Smule has often been a platform for interacting with more popular sensibilities, boasting over 40 million users, it has also stepped into the world of opera, partnering with the San Francisco Opera and most recently, with the production team behind Ron Howard’s “Pavarotti.” With this latest partnership, those on the network get a chance to record themselves singing “Nessun Dorma” alongside the iconic tenor and then sharing online.

“Pavarotti’s virtual presence in the Smule community aligns with his personal drive as a musician as well as the filmmakers intent. It’s a virtual way of reconnecting with Pavarotti and his music, of feeling the emotion anew, in the form of community user-generated duets from around the world,” noted further statements. “Smule worked with Decca Records to virtually integrate Pavarotti into its global singing community along with other celebrity members like Nat King Cole. His presence on Smule celebrates the legacy of one of the world’s greatest musicians and helps tell Pavarotti’s larger personal narrative so profoundly told by Ron Howard in the film.”
