Skylark Opera To Present Intriguing ‘Don Giovanni’

By Francisco Salazar

This summer the Skylark Opera will present Mozart’s beloved masterpiece “Don Giovanni.”

The new production will a site-specific production in collaboration with Angels & Demons Entertainment and will be set during the Prohibition era, circa 1932. The production will feature Don Giovanni as a nefarious owner of the most popular speakeasy in town.

The production will take place at the Minneapolis Women’s Club and will give audience members an up-close and riveting glimpse into the tormented life of this power-hungry, crazed Lothario. A master manipulator of both men and women, he offers alcohol to drink-crazed men, and himself to women desperate to have him. The audience will travel throughout the magnificent Woman’s Club of Minneapolis during the course of the opera, enjoying hors d’oeuvres during the banquet scene and desserts that will be served post show.

Skylark artistic director and production director Robert Neu noted, “Directing ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ last summer at the James J. Hill House was a revelation for me.  Our audiences were extremely taken with the site-specific nature of the project and I’m happy to work on another similar approach.”

The Don Giovanni cast will include Gabriel Preisser in the title role, Andrew Wilkowske, Karin Wolverton, David Blalock and Tess Altiveros. The production opens June 15 and runs through the 25.
