By David Salazar

The Semperoper Dresden has announced a major cast change for its performance of “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” on April 20, 2019.

Mert Süngü, who was supposed to sing the role of Count Almaviva, will now be replaced by tenor Maxim Mironov. The company made an official announcement of the cast change via social media.

Mironov is one of the major exponents of this opera over the past few years. Per Operabase, he has taken on seven productions of the opera since 2016 at such companies as the Opernhaus Zürich, the Rossini Opera Festival, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and the Sächsiche Staatsoper, Dresden, among others. He is set to interpret the opera in Venice in August / October and will also present his interpretation in Barcelona in 2020.

Süngü has already performed four previous performances this season in the opera alongside Diana Haller, and Anke Vondung; Vondung is set for the performance on Saturday. The Figaro in question will be Christoph Pohl, while Don Basilio will be interpreted by Roberto Scandiuzzi.

Here is an excerpt of Mironov in “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” from the Rossini Festival in 2018.
