Santa Fe Opera Previews New Opera About Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs In NYC

“The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs” by Mason Bates and Mark Campbell, hit the stage at the Guggenheim Museum as part of its program “Works & Progress.” The program introduced pieces of this unique opera followed by a moderated discussion with the Grammy-nominated Composer Mason Bates on his new work.

During the discussion, Bates emphasized that this will be his first opera and is excited about the work’s future.  Kevin Newbury, who will stage the opera, moderated the discussion alongside Mark Campbell, the opera’s librettist and the three gave their takes on how this opera, based on Job’s life and company, originated

Six scenes were previewed, each portraying crucial parts to Jobs’ life. During the performance, Bates revealed that he will incorporate an acoustic guitar and electronic sound effects throughout the piece. Guitarist James Moore and conductor and accompanist Robert Tweten played piano throughout the performance.

Baritone Edward Parks played the role of Steve Jobs, while Sarah Coit played his wife, Laurene. Tenor Garrett Sorenson was the entertaining Woz, Wei Wu played Jobs’ spiritual advisor Kobun Chino Otogawa, and soprano Jessica Jones played Chrisann Brennan.

The full production will premiere on July 22 at the Santa Fe Opera and will have a full orchestra and chorus.
