Santa Fe Opera 2017 Preview: ‘The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs’ Set to Make Its Mark

By David Salazar

At the end of this week, audiences in the US will get the operatic event of the summer. That, of course, is the world premiere of “The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs,” an opera written by Mark Campbell with music by Mason Bates.

The work kicks off its run on July 22 at the Santa Fe Opera and runs through August 25, 2017. It stars baritone Edward Parks as Jobs, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke as his wife Laurene Powell, baritone Kelly Markgraf as his father Paul Jobs, bass Wei Wu as Kôbun Chino Otogawa, and tenor Garrett Sorenson as Woz, his friend, and business partner. The work will be conducted by Michael Christie, who has worked closely with Campbell’s other operas including the world premiere performances of “The Shining,” “Silent Night” and “The Manchurian Candidate.”

“It is a pleasure and an honor to be part of another phenomenally talented American composer’s first opera,” Christie says. “Mason is a true theater composer, blending voice, drama and his revelatory musical vision.”

Other world premieres for Christie include Mark Adamo’s “The Gospel of Mary Magdalene,” and Ricky Ian Gordon’s “27.”

The opera will be directed by Kevin Newbury with set designs by Victoria “Vita” Tzykun.
