San Francisco Opera Awards Outgoing Head of Wardrobe With Highest Honor

The San Francisco Opera has awarded Geoffrey M. Craig, the Company’s Head of Wardrobe, with the San Francisco Opera Medal, the company’s highest honor.

The award was presented in honor of Craig’s 36 years of service, which will come to an end at the close of this summer season.

“In over three decades of exemplary service, Geoffry has led the Wardrobe Department with great professionalism, heart and care. His exacting rigor and compassionate understanding have been critical in allowing us to present some of the finest performances in the world, night after night, on the War Memorial stage. I am so honored to present Geoffry with the Opera Medal and formally acknowledge his tireless dedication to excellence at San Francisco Opera,” said SFO General Director Matthew Shilvock.

Craig’s career with the company started in 1981 as a staffer and he eventually moved on to Head of Men’s Wardrobe in 1986 before taking on the department head in 1999.

Of the many productions he took on with the company, Craig noted that “War and Peace” tested his limits.

“There were 135 supernumerary men in the show—the Russian and French armies! We had to dress them at Zellerbach rehearsal space and then march them in formation to the opera house and out onto the stage.”
