San Francisco Opera 2017-18 Season To Feature New John Adams Opera & Wagner Ring

The San Francisco has announced its 2017-18 season with major classics making a return to the house and one significant world premiere slated to close out 2017.

The big announcement of the day was that this season is music director Nicola Liusiotti’s last with the company, though it was hinted that the company would find ways to have him return to conduct other works in the future.

Turandot – Sept. 8 – Dec. 9, 2017

The season kicks off on Sept. 8 2017 with Puccini’s “Turandot” starring Brian Jagde as Calaf. Martina Serafin and Nina Stemme alternate the lead role while Maria Agresta, Leah Crocetta, Toni Marie Palmertree take on Liu. Nicola Luisiotti conducts in what is his final season as music director. Christopher Franklin will take on the second run which ends on Dec. 9.

Elektra – Sept. 9 – 27, 2017

Strauss’ “Elektra” returns to the company on Sept. 9 for the first time in decades in a new production by Keith Warner. Christine Goerke takes on the title role with Stephanie Blythe playing her mother Klytemnestra for the very first time in her career and Adrianne Pieczonka as her sister, a role she took on at the Metropolitan Opera. The production is slated to set the story in a museum with the main character getting lost in the world of Richard Strauss’ early masterpiece. The run ends on Sept. 27 with Henrik Nánási in the pit.

La Traviata – Sept. 23 – Oct. 17, 2017

“La Traviata” returnson Sept. 23 with Aurelia Florian in the lead role. Atalla Ayan sings Alfredo Germont and Artur Rucinski will portray Giorgio Germont. This is Luisiotti’s final work as music director with the company, the final performance coming on Oct. 17.

Manon – Nov. 4 – 22, 2017

A new production of Massenet’s “Manon” premieres on Nov. 4 with Nadine Sierra and Michael Fabiano in the leading roles. Patrick Fournillier conducts a production by Vincent Boussard. The opera premieres on Nov. 4 and runs through Nov. 22, 2017.

Girls of the Golden West – Nov. 21 – Dec. 10, 2017

The fall season concludes with the World Premiere of John Adams’ “Girls of the Golden West,” which premieres on Nov. 21, the run ending on Dec. 10. The opera is set during the California Gold Rush. The production, which will be directed by Peter Sellars, who also wrote the libretto. Grant Gershon conducts a cast that includes Julia Bullock, Davone Tines, J’nai Bridges, Paul Appleby, Hye Jung Lee, Ryan McKinny, Elliot Madore and Lorena Feijoo.

Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen

The company also announced that it will revive Francesca Zambello’s Ring Cycle, which will be showcased for the company’s 2018 summer season.
