Saioa Hernández & Angela Meade Headline Amigos de la Opera A Coruña’s 2018 Season

The Amigos de la Opera A Coruña has announced its upcoming 2018 program featuring two operas, a number of recitals and a gala featuring one of today’s biggest stars.

Here is a look.

Opera

The series opens with Bellini’s “Il Pirata,” which will be presented for the first time with the company. The work, which was mastered by Maria Callas, will star Saioa Hernández, who will become the first Spaniard to open the Teatro alla Scala and tenor Josef Kang. Juan Jesús Rodríguez will also star and Antonello Allemandi will conduct the legendary score. Xosé Manuel Rabón directs the production

Performance Date: Sept. 8, 2018

Fabio Fagioli takes on the title role in Handel’s “Serse.” The work will be the first baroque opera presented in La Coruña since 2009 and will also star Vivica Genaux and Inga Kalna.  Il Pommo D’Oro will be conducted by Maxim Emelyanychev in a concert version.

Concerts 

Angela Meade gives a gala concert featuring Kamal Khan conducting the Sinfónica de Galicia. The concert will include arias and scenes from “Semiramide,” “Il Pirata,” “La Forza del Destino,” “Adriana Lecouvreur,” “La Wally,” “Mefistofele,” and “Candide.”

Vivica Genaux and Borja Quiza celebrate the 250 years of Opera at La Coruña in a gala entitled “Setaro, el constructor de Utopías.” The concert will include works by Mozart, Hándel, Pergolesi, Broschi and Galuppi. Ricardo Bernardes condcuts the Orquesta Barroca de Mateus.

Recitals

Soprano Carmen Subrido gives a recital featuring opera, song and zarzuela.

Countertenor Alberto Miguélez sings songs and opera arias with the Baroque Ensemble.
