Russell Thomas Slated For Salzburg Festival Debut, First ‘Otello’

By David Salazar

It’s been a summer of debuts for Russell Thomas and he is about to make yet another one on Thursday, July 27, when he takes on the title role in “La Clemenza di Tito” at the Salzburg Festival.

This will be Thomas’ first time singing at the festival in a role that he has previously conquered. The American tenor took on the role back in 2012 at the Metropolitan Opera for one performance and will be returning to it for the first of two occasions during the 2017-18 season. In addition to performing the role in Salzburg, Thomas will also present his interpretation in Amsterdam at the National Opera.

Thomas is coming off a role debut in Wagner’s “Das Rheingold” where he interpreted the character of Loge with the New York Philharmonic.

Once he’s done with “Tito,” he will head to Tanglewood where he will take on a concert performance of a hotly anticipated “Tosca,” and then he will make another greatly anticipated role debut in Verdi’s “Otello” with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for two nights only.
