By Francisco Salazar

Doris Soffel has pulled out of Barber’s “Vanessa” at Glyndebourne.

Soffel, who was expected to portray the old Baroness, will be replaced by Rosalind Plowright, who was last heard singing in the Glyndebourne chorus in 1977.

Plowright is set to give 3 masterclasses at the Prague Summer Nights Festival and next season will return to the Royal Opera house for La Contessa di Coigny in Giordano’s “Andrea Chénier.” She also sings Mama Lucia in Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” at the Göteborg Opera. She also sings Madame de la Haltière in Massenet’s “Cendrillon” for Nantes and Angers opera

Soffel will return to the stage this summer in “Arabella” at the Bayerische Staatsoper and will also perform in Bernstein’s “Candide” at the Teatro Liceu.

Keith Warner directs the new production of “Vanessa,” which will star Emma Bell, Virginie Verrez, and Edgaras Montvidas. Jakub Hrůša conducts the production, which will showcased live in cinemas on August 14.
