Rolando Villazon has been named the artistic director of the Mozarteum Foundation’s Mozart Week.

The foundation announced that Villazon will begin his position this year as he will plan programs dedicated to Mozart in what the festival calls Mozart Week.

The first Mozart Week that will be entirely programmed by Villazón takes place in 2019 and his contract is expected to last six years.

Villazon has recently added numerous Mozart roles to his repertoire and is in the midst of recording a Mozart cycle for Deutsche Grammophon. He will be adding the role of Tito in “La Clemenza di Tito” this season followed by Papageno in “The Magic Flute.”

Villazon has also recently made headlines for stepping into the director’s chair. He recently directed a new production of Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” in Germany and has also directed productions of Massenet’s “Werther” and Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore.”

The tenor has also been a major figure in Salzburg performing numerous operas and recitals at the Salzburg Festival including his breakout in Verdi’s “La Traviata” and returns this summer for Handel’s “Ariodante.”
