Roberto Alagna is now an artist for Sony Classical. The record company announced via Twitter that Alagna had signed a long-term, multi-album deal.

In the press statement the company announced that “after a  highly acclaimed international career spanning more than thirty years, Alagna had built a huge and dedicated following around the world. Acknowledged as Frances most important classical artist and as a cultural icon, he is one of the leading tenors in the world. All in all, Mr. Alagna has sold over 5 million albums in France alone, making him the country’s most successful classical recording artist ever.”

In the release Alagna stated “I am utterly delighted to become part of the international Sony Classical family. I have long since admired the label and its achievements and I look forward to a long and fruitful association in the years ahead.”

The first album with the company will be released in 2018.

Alagna is the latest tenor to sign a record deal with Sony. Over the past few years the company signed Jonas Kaufmann, Vittorio Grigolo, Plácido Domingo and most recently Juan Diego Flórez. Other artists the company has acquired include Sonya Yoncheva, Olga Peretyatko and Pretty Yende among others.

Previously, Alagna recorded numerous solo albums and complete operas for EMI and was most recently signed with Deutsche Grammophon. The tenor is currently rehearsing the title role of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” at the Vienna State Opera. He returns to London’s Royal Opera for a run of Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” before returning to the Metropolitan Opera for a run of Alfano’s “Cyrano de Bergerac.”
