Roberto Alagna, Elina Garanca & Camilla Nylund Headline The Vienna State Opera’s 6 New Productions

The Vienna State Opera has announced its 2017-18 Season with six new productions.

The company will showcase a new production of Prokofiev’s “Der Spieler” with Elena Maximova and Linda Watson. The production will be conducted by Simone Young and directed by Karoline Gruber, with the opening night on Oct. 4.

Willy Decker directs a new production of Berg’s “Lulu” with Agneta Eichenholz and Bo Skovhus. Angela Denoke and Franz Grundheber round the cast which will be conducted by Ingo Metzmacher. The production premieres on Dec. 3.

William Christie and David McVicar team up for a new production of Handel’s “Ariodante” with Sarah Connelly in the title role. The opera opens on Feb. 24, 2018.

Einem’s rarely performed worked “Dantons Todd” opens on March 24, 2018, in a new production by Josef Ernst Kopplinger. Susanna Malkki conducts Wolfgang Koch in the production.

Saint-Saens’ “Samson et Dalila” gets a new production with a starry cast that includes Roberto Alagna and Elina Garanca. The production also stars Carlos Alvarez and will be directed by Alexander Liedtke. Marco Armiliato conducts opening night on May 12, 2018.

The final new production will open on June 11 as Weber’s “Der Frieshutz” takes center stage in a production by Christian Rath. Tomas Netopil conducts an ensemble that includes Daniela Fally, Camilla Nylund, and Andreas Schager.
