Renée Fleming, ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ Live in HD Transmission Puts Up Better Box Office Average Than ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘The Fate of the Furious’

Take a look at the global box office for a moment. At number 10, below such films as “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Fate of the Furious,” “The Circle” and “Beauty and the Beast,” all featuring some of Hollywood’s most notable actors, is “Der Rosenkavalier.”

That is the worldwide box office. Take that in for a second. The Met’s Live in HD series scored a spot in the top 10 over the weekend, its $1.7 million raked in in just one day. All the other films on that list needed three days to reach their respective numbers. To make the numbers all the more fascinating is the theater count. The Met transmission averaged $1888.88 per theater. The only films with a better average in the top 10 were the top three films, “How to Be a Latin Lover” and “Lowriders;” the other four films in the top 10, which include “Beauty and the Beast ($1795 per theater)” and “The Fate of the Furious ($1728 per theater)” averaged less per theater than Renée Fleming’s emotional send-off.

What is most interesting about that is that the transmission isn’t even the highest grossing of the year. The Met’s transmission of “La Traviata” back in March raked in $1.8 million in its single day, undeniably drawn by the superstar quality of Sonya Yoncheva around the world.
