Purchase College Opera To Present Trio Of One-Act Operas In March

By Nicole Kuchta

The Purchase Opera Company of Purchase College, State University of New York will present “Purchase Opera: Trilogy” in the Recital Hall of The Performing Arts Center.

The Conservatory of Music will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Purchase Opera Company under the direction of Jacque Trussel by presenting the first two operas presented by the company in 1999, Puccini’s “Suor Angelica” and “Gianni Schicchi.” Raphaël Lucas’ “Confession,” a prequel to “Suor Angelica,” will round out the trilogy. The opera, with libretto by Jacque Trussel and Margaret Vignola, “was developed at Purchase College and serves as a dramatic counterpart to the other two operas,” according to the press release.

The performances will feature students of the award-winning Conservatory of Music’s Voice and Opera Studies Area, and Music Director Hugh Murphy will lead the Purchase Symphony Orchestra. Purchase Opera will collaborate with the Theatre Design/Technology program in the Conservatory of Theatre Arts to produce the “Trilogy.”

Trussel noted in a press statement, “We are thrilled to give our students the opportunity to perform a range of dramatic and comedic works, while at the same time providing the community with an approachable, world-class opera experience in a local venue.”

Performances are set to be held on March 21, 22, 23, & 24, 2019.
