Pretty Yende Adds An Award to Her Resume

By David Salazar

Pretty Yende has been awarded the South Africa Music Award for International Achiever.

According to a press release, the soprano is being recognized for her major strides on a global scale. The soprano, still very much at the start of her career, has already been showcased at some of the greatest opera houses in the world. This season was a major tour-de-force for Yende, particularly with her major moments at the Metropolitan Opera. She kicked things off in early 2017 by stealing the show in “Il Barbiere di Siviglia.” That was followed up by an appearance in “I Puritani,” the South African soprano replacing an ailing Diana Damrau for a performance. But then she put together perhaps her finest showing in March when she embodied Juliette in Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette.” Her rise to stardom earned her appearances on the shows of Stephen Colbert and Wendy Williams.

Nhlanhla Sibisi, CEO of RiSA noted that the soprano was very deserving of the award. “For a long time, we have seen the rise of Pretty Yende on international stages. She represents the voice of an ambitious go-getting generation. We salute her achievements and she is a worthy winner this year. Bravo.”
