Portland Opera To Showcase John Frame’s Noted ‘Faust’ Production

By David Salazar

The Portland Opera has announced that it will be showcasing the West Coast premiere of John Frame and Kevin Newbury’s “Faust” production.

The showcase appeared at the Lyric Opera of Chicago earlier this season, with OperaWire’s Santosh Venkataraman noting “Frame’s unique concepts combine with glorious singing.”

“This is one of the most unique and exciting projects I’ve ever worked on,” stated Portland Opera’s General Director Christopher Mattaliano in a press release. “From the moment I saw Frame’s exhibition in 2012, I was struck by the eerie beauty and inherent theatricality of his work and am thrilled that we are bringing his art to the stage for the very first time with this production.”

The production will headline Jonathan Boyd as Faust, soprano Angel Blue as Marguerite, and Alfred Walker as the devil himself, Méphistofélès. Edward Parks appears as Valentin. Portland Opera’s Music Director George Manahan conducts the production which kicks off on June 8, 2018, and runs through the 16th for a total of four performances.

This is the first time the company presents the famed Gounod opera since 2006 with other runs coming in 1966, 1979, 1989, and 1999.
