‘Porgy and Bess’ Confirmed For Metropolitan Opera’s 2019-20 Season

Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” is set for a major Met Opera return during the 2019-20 season.

According to an article by the New York Times, the new production will be directed by Bartlett Sher and feature Eric Owens. Owens performed a duet from the opera at the recent Metropolitan Opera 50th anniversary gala celebration and program notes indicated that he would take on the title male lead in an upcoming season.

The opera has not been to the Met since 1989-90 season when it received 12 performances. The opera made its debut at the house just five years earlier in the 1984-85 season, during which it was showcased 16 performances. In total it has appeared 54 times at the Met.

Other confirmed upcoming productions in seasons beyond the 2017-18 season include “Aida,” “Adriana Lecouvreur” and “Salome,” all of which will feature diva Anna Netrebko, a new “Ring Cycle” and the return of the current production for one last time,” Jake Heggie’s “Dead Man Walking,” “Samson et Dalila (starring Elina Garanca),” “Marnie,” “La Traviata (starring Diana Damrau),” and “Wozzeck.”
