Plácido Domingo To Receive Honorary Doctorate

Plácido Domingo will receive the Honorary Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Manhattan School of Music.

The school announced that during the School’s 2018 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 11, Maestro Domingo would receive the honor alongside jazz great Paquito D’Rivera, conductor Bernard Labadie, pianist Robert McDonald (DMA’90), and founder and director of MSM’s Musical Theatre Program Luis Perez.

Domingo, D’Rivera, Labadie, McDonald, and Perez join a distinguished list of past Manhattan School of Music Honorary Doctorate recipients that includes Birgit Nilsson, Wynton Marsalis, Dawn Upshaw (MM ’85), Max Roach (BM ’52), Billy Joel, Angela Lansbury, and Bebe Neuwirth. The Honorary Doctorates will be presented by MSM President James Gandre and Interim Provost Joan Gordon.

Domingo recently sang the role of Miller in Verdi’s “Luisa Miller” at the Metropolitan Opera marking the 149th role in his legendary career. Domingo is currently conducting Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette” at the Met and this summer joins Anna Netrebko for a new production of Verdi’s “Macbeth” at the Berlin State Opera. He also conducts at the Bayreuth Festival and sings his 150th role in “The Pearl Fishers” at the Salzburg Festival. Domingo serves as a conductor and General Director of LA Opera and has appeared in nearly 3,900 career performances. He also has 100 professional recordings and has won 12 Grammy Awards.
