Pavol Breslik to Replace Jonas Kaufmann At the Grand Opening Concerts of the Elbphilharmonie

By Francisco Salazar

Jonas Kaufmann has cancelled his participation in the Grand Opening Concerts with the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg this January.

The announcement was made via Twitter as the company announced that Kaufmann is still ill. Elbphilharmonie stated has withdrawn from his appearances at our Grand Opening concerts in January due to illness. We wish him a speedy recovery!

However, it was announced that Pavol Breslik would replace Kaufmann.

The recent announcement is the latest in a string of cancellations for Kaufmann that began back in October. The tenor announced on his website that “the side effects of a medicine made burst a small blood vessel on my vocal cords. To avoid permanent damage, I have to stop singing until the haematoma has completely subsided.” The tenor is slated to return to the stage in January for a run of Wagner’s “Lohengrin.” However, there has been no confirmation. He is also scheduled for new productions of Giordano’s “Andrea Chenier” at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Verdi’s “Otello” at the Royal Opera. He is also slated to take up a residency at the Barbican in London and perform works by Strauss and Wagner.

Pavol Breslick is one of the leading lyric tenors in the world. This season he is slated to perform in a new production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” at the Aix En Provence. He is also slated to return to the Bayerische Staatsoper for Janacek’s “Jenufa” and Verdi’s “Falstaff.” The tenor will also perform Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” at the Vienna State Opera.

The Grand Opening Concerts with Elbphilharmonie will include works by Beethoven and Wagner and Breslick will perform alongside Bryn Terfel and Anja Harteros in the concert.
