OperaRox Productions To Present Alcina

By Francisco Salazar

This weekend, the start up opera company OperaRox Productions will present Handel’s “Alcina.”

The company will perform the work on Feb 3 and 5. Noted as one of Handel’s most popular works, Alcina tells the story of a fearsome sorceress with an island of her own, who lures men to their doom. After seducing them with her magic, she turns the men into wildlife to decorate her home. However, when she meets the solider Ruggiero, she falls in love.

The cast includes Zen Wu as Alcina, Chloë Schaaf as Ruggiero, Anna Slate as Morgana, Melanie Ashlar as Bradamante, Eric Alexieff as Oronte,  Kevin Miller as Melisso and Ginny Weant as Oberto. The opera will be directed by Maayan Voss de Bettancourt and will be conducted by Dmitri Glivinskiy.

OperaRox was started in 2015 by Kim Feltkamp and Jamie Appleton with the goal to provide opportunities for young opera artists to learn and experiment in an encouraging yet challenging environment.

The company’s first full-length opera was Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” in August 2015 in NYC.  Later this season the company will perform the New York City premiere of Griffin Candey’s “Sweet by Kate”  and Price Walden’s “The Contract Player.”
