Opera North To Feature AV Showcase of ‘L’Orfeo’ At Latitude Forest

By David Salazar

Opera North will take over the Latitude Festival from July 13 to 16 with “Underworld,” an audio-visual installation based on Monteverdi’s famed “L’Orfeo” at the Faraway Forest.

The installation will feature several recordings from the opera including baritone Simon Keenlyside in the lead role. The recording was originally made for “She, So Beloved,” an installation by cult animators The Brothers Quay, which was commissioned in 2007 by Opera North to mark the 400th anniversary of “L’Orfeo.” Paula Sides will be heard as Eurydice.

“Latitude Festival has become firmly established as one of Opera North’s most exciting summer venues. The Faraway Forest is a magical environment in which to draw out the power, drama and enchantment of opera-up-close, for the musically curious and adventurous audiences who come to the festival,” said Producer and Opera North Projects Manager Jo Nockels. “We were delighted by the response of our audience at last year’s festival when we filled the Faraway Forest with the sounds of pre-war Eastern Europe from a haunted bandstand. We hope to repeat the magic with this year’s installation, which will be even more immersive, and taking place over all four nights.”

“Underworld” will later appear as part of Light Night on Friday, Oct. 5, 2017.
