Opera Holland Park Announces 2018 Season With Verdi, Mascagni And Mozart

By Francisco Salazar

Opera Holland Park has announced its 2018 season.

The season will consist of three operatic classics and one new rarity.

The season kicks off with Strauss’ “Ariadne Auf Naxos.” The new staging will be a co-production with the Danish National Opera. Performances will be held in Scotland in February and March 2018 before the production moves to OHP in July 2018. The conductor for both houses will be Brad Cohen, who last appeared at OHP in 2015’s showcase of “Flight.” Jennifer France will portray the role of  Zerbinetta while Mardi Byers will sing Ariadne. Kor-Jan Dusseljee will take on Bacchus while Stephen Gadd will sing the role of Music Master.

Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” follows with Sarah Tynan in the role of Despina, Kitty Whately as Dorabella and Nicholas Lester as Guglielmo.

“La Traviata” marks the return of Director Rodula Gaitanou and International Opera Awards Best Designer nominee Cordelia Chishol. Lauren Fagan will make her role debut as Violetta. This production will also host a special Schools Matinee performance through which 1,000 young people from across London will have the chance to discover opera.

Mascagni’s “Isabeau” will make a rare appearance continuing Opera Holland Park’s traditional of including obscure works into the season. The principal tenor role of Folco will be performed by David Butt Philip. “Isabeau’s” librettist was Luigi Illica, Mascagni’s collaborator on “Iris,” and also one of the scribes behind many of Puccini’s famous operas.
