Opera Based on Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ To Get US Premiere in 2018

(Credit: Yves Renaud) Following the premiere of 'Another Brick in the Wall: L'Opera' Saturday in Montreal, the production revealed when it will debut stateside.

Pink Floyd is coming to the opera.

Well not necessarily, but “Another Brick in the Wall: The Opera” will be heading to the Cincinnati Opera in July 2018. The opera will be part of the company’s 98th season, its first after a $135 million restoration of the Cincinnati Music Hall.

The opera, which made its world premiere in Montreal a few weeks ago, showcases original words and music by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. The work was inspired by the band’s 1979 album “The Wall.”

Julien Bilodeau is the composer of the work. Dominic Champagne will direct the Cincinnati production. Etienne Dupuis will lead the cast as Pink, a “fallen rock star.” Alain Trudel will conduct. Additionally, the opera features eight soloists and 48 chorus members.

“I sat there not expecting to be moved, and I was moved,” Waters said, who was in attendance for the premiere at the Opéra de Montréal Saturday. The statement came in great contrast to his thoughts back in 2016 when he dismissed opera and rock coming together.

“It had been my experience that experiments in collaboration between the worlds of rock and roll and the worlds of symphonic music were generally disastrous and should be embarked upon with extreme trepidation,” Waters said in March 2016.
