Opera Awards 2017 Winners: Lawrence Brownlee and Anna Netrebko Win Top Awards

The International Opera Awards were presented on May 7, 2017, at the London Coliseum, celebrating the best in Opera.

The year’s big winner went to Opéra de Lyon as it won Company of the Year beating out Houston Grand Opera, Oper Stuttgart, Opera Vlaanderen, Royal Opera House, and the Teatro alla Scala.

Anna Netrebko, who was headlining the Metropolitan Opera’s 50th Anniversary gala, took home the Female Singer if the Year Award while Lawrence Brownlee won the Male Singer of the Year Prize.

Meanwhile, Juan Diego Flórez was awarded the Readers’ Award sponsored by Opera magazine and legendary soprano Renata Scotto was given a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Rising star Louise Alder won Best Young Singer while Pretty Yende’s “A Journey” took home the Best Recording Solo Recital.

Christof Loy won the Director Award while Thomas Adès’ “The Exterminating Angel” won Best World Premiere. The opera had its premiere at the Salzburg Festival and is currently playing at the Royal Opera House. It is slated for the Metropolitan Opera and the Danish Opera.

The Arnold Schoenberg Chor won Best Chorus while Philippe Jordan had the honors of winning Best Conductor.

Designer Klaus Grünberg was awarded the Best Designer prize while Natalya Sats Children’s Musical Theatre, Moscow was honored for its Education and Outreach programs.

The Metropolitan Opera won Best New Production for Kaija Saariaho’s “L’amour de loin”, which was directed by Robert Lepage, while Wexford Festival Opera won Best Festival.

Best Leadership in Opera went to Bernard Foccroulle. Lorzeno Viotti won Best Newcomer.

BR Klassik’s “Pique Dame” went home with Best Recording of a Complete Opera.

The Rediscovered Work Award went to Wladyslaw Żeleński’s “Goplana” while Alberto Zedda was honored with a Special Award in Memoriam.

The evening included performances from Anita Rachvelishvili, Stuart Skelton, Bryan Hymel, Lauren Fagan, and Rhian Lois.
