Opera Awards 2017 Reveal One Major Performer

American tenor Bryan Hymel will be performing at the Opera Awards this year.

The Opera Awards’ official Twitter account made the announcement earlier on Thursday, including a video of the tenor performing at the Rosenblatt Recital.

The Opera Awards is an annual awards ceremony celebrating the best of international opera. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 7 at the London Coliseum.

This year’s finalists for Best Female Singer include Maria Bengtsson, Stéphanie d’Oustrac, Christiane Karg, Anna Netrebko, Anita Rachvelishvilli and Daniela Sindram. Best Male Singer finalists include Lawrence Brownlee, Stéphane Degout, Eric Owens, Matthew Polenzani, Johan Reuter and Martin Winkler.

The finalists for Best Opera Company are Houston Grand Opera, Oper Stuttgart, Opéra de Lyon, Opera Vlaanderen, Royal Opera House and Teatro alla Scala.

Finally, the Readers Award, sponsored by Opera Magazine, includes Roberto Alagna, Cecilia Bartoli, Piotr Beczała, Renée Fleming, Juan Diego Flórez, Elīna Garanča, Sondra Radvanovsky and Bryn Terfel as the finalists. This final category is open to the general public.

International Opera Awards were founded by Harry Hyman in 2012 to raise the profile of opera as an art form, to recognize and reward success in opera and to generate funds to provide bursaries for aspiring talent in opera from around the world. It is also recognized as the Opera’s Oscars and many of the world’s greatest singers attend the ceremony.
