Opera Australia has announced that its 60th Anniversary year ended with an outstanding financial and artistic result.

The company announced in a press release that it had made strong gains that resulted in a $3.0 million surplus.

Chairman David Mortimer AO noted, “The 2016 financial outcome is a remarkable turnaround year-on-year for the Company and a tribute to Chief Executive Craig Hassall’s leadership and Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini’s inspired programming. It is also a tribute to the considerable output from the hard-working, productive, creative and administrative workforce, that forms the backbone of Australia’s largest performing arts company.”

According to the press statement, the company’s 2016 programming had a lot to do with the success of the company. Notably the inclusion of “new technologies and new initiatives designed to consolidate its standing as an opera company firmly positioned in the 21st century.”

Among the highlights of the 2016 season included the multi-award winning production of “The Rabbits”  and the revival of Wagner’s “The Ring Cycle.” The company also presented a co-production with Lausanne Opera of Verdi’s “Luisa Miller” and also showcased Francesca Zambello’s production of Prokofiev’s “The Love for Three Oranges.”

“El Kid,” a new opera for children in association with the Arts Centre Melbourne, also had a premiere. The company also had multiple initiatives including Opera Australia’s Regional Student Scholarships, which awarded four teenagers selected from more than 50 finalists.
