Opera Australia Bids Adieu To Classic ‘Madama Butterfly’ Production

By Francisco Salazar

Opera Australia is retiring Moffatt Oxenbould’s beloved “Madama Butterfly” production.

The production, which premiered in 1997, opens for the last time on Oct. 24, 2017, with Karah Son, Hyeseoung Kwon, Diego Torre, and Andeka Gorrotxategi.

“Madama Butterfly’s” production has been performed more than any other in Opera Australia’s repertoire and has been universally praised for its sheer beauty, the gorgeous costumes, evocative sets, and Puccini’s magnificent music.

Regarding the decision, Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini stated, “It’ll be terrific to stage this final season of Moffatt’s Madama Butterfly in the Capitol Theatre, which lends itself so well to opera. The elegance of the theatre itself, the sheer scale of the venue, the big pit – we haven’t done an opera at the Capitol in thirteen years, so it’ll be a grand event and fitting farewell to this beautiful production.”

The production runs through Nov. 4, 2017.
