By David Salazar

Opera America continues its advocacy for up-and-coming opera companies. The organization recently announced grant awards for female composers. Now it is turning toward helping companies looking to change the opera world.

In a press release, the organization revealed that it would be giving out $1.4 million to 27 companies, including American Lyric Theater, American Opera Projects, Anchorage Opera, Arizona Opera, The Atlanta Opera, Austin Opera, Beth Morrison Projects, Central City Opera, The Dallas Opera, Fargo-Moorhead Opera, Florentine Opera Company, The Glimmerglass Festival, HERE, Houston Grand Opera, Michigan Opera, Minnesota Opera, Opera Memphis, Opera Omaha, Opera Philadelphia, Opera Saratoga, Pacific Opera Victoria, San Diego Opera, San Francisco Opera, The Santa Fe Opera, Seattle Opera, and Tulsa Opera.

“Thanks to the tremendous generosity of the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, our member companies receive support to pursue new thinking and experimentation — to expand the boundaries of their current practices and adapt to an ever-changing field,” stated Marc A. Scorca, president and CEO of Opera America, in the press release. “These grants benefit not only the recipients but the entire art form: Through the lessons gleaned from the funded initiatives, companies throughout North America will be able to borrow and adapt good ideas, spreading the learning field-wide.”
