Oper Leipzig Announces New ‘Tannhäuser’ Production

Oper Leipzig has officially announced a replacement for its “Tannhäuser” production.

The company announced via Twitter stating, “It’s official: The internationally renowned Catalan director Calixto Bieto takes over the production of Richard Wagner’s ‘Tannhäuser,’ originally planned with Katharina Wagner.”

In December, the company announced that it would not present Wagner’s production due to “logistical challenges.” The company promptly looked for an alternative in Bieto’s 2015 production which was hailed in Antwerp.

Wagner returns to Leipzig for Richard Wagner’s “Lohengrin” in November 2020.

“Tannhäuser” opens on March 17 and runs through May 27 as the Wagner portion of the Leipzig festival. The production is set to star Burkhard Fritz in the title role, Elisabet Strid as Elizabeth, Kathrin Goring as Venus, and Mathias Hausmann as Wolfram. Ukf Schirmer conducts the work.
