On Site Opera To Showcase Milhaud’s “La Mère Coupable’ At The Garage

By David Salazar

You know Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” and Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro.” But few know the final piece in the Beaumarchais Trilogy, “The Guilty Mother.”

Well, now New Yorkers will get a chance to experience Darius Milhaud’s adaptation known as “La mère coupable,” which will be performed this summer at The Garage on W. 50th Street. Performances will take place on June 20, 22, 23 and 24. It will be the U.S. Premiere of the opera.

The opera concludes the company’s three-year Figaro Project, which featured lesser-known adaptations (read: not Mozart or Rossini) of the trilogy. The company kicked things off in 2015 with the rarely performed “The Barber of Seville” by Giovanni Paisiello. This opera was actually what inspired Rossini to create the now-iconic repertory staple. A year later the company took on Marcos Portugal’s “The Marriage of Figaro.” This opera was written 13 years after the famous Mozart work.

The production of “La mère coupable” will also be presented in honor of Milhaud’s 125th birthday and will also be dedicated to Katherine Warne, composer, and founder of the Darius Milhaud Society

On Site Opera is also slated to present Mozart’s “The Secret Gardener” in May this season in a co-production with The Atlanta Opera.
