Obituary – Tenor Paul Gyton Dedicated His Life to WNO

By David Salazar

It has been a hard few days in the opera Community. Over the weekend, Manfred Jung passed away and on Tuesday, tenor Paul Gyton passed away as well.

Gyton was not a major soloist, but instead remained a loyal member of the chorus of the Welsh National Opera for a whopping 40 years. The tenor joined the ensemble on April 12, 1977, occasionally getting solo parts in select operas. Among them was Don Basilio in “Le Nozze Di Figaro,” which he performed just a year after joining the company. He also took on the role of the Mosquito in “The Cunning Little Vixen,” which he would perform many times thereafter.

“Our thoughts are with Paul’s wife Alwyn, his family and friends at this saddest of times. We must also acknowledge the loss that his friends and colleagues in the WNO Chorus and wider Company will all feel at this time; they will miss him terribly,” said a statement from the company. “His huge commitment as a Chorister, as well as being such a good colleague and a true friend to so many over that time is impossible to acknowledge easily. The sheer number of performances, places visited, miles traveled, notes and words learned and sung in languages many and varied(!) is virtually impossible to imagine.”
