John Brecknock, a beloved tenor at the English National Opera, has passed away.

The ENO announced the news on Twitter and said, “We are sorry to hear about the death of highly respected tenor John Brecknock, who sang many major roles for ENO and around the world.”

The tenor, who was known for the clarity of his voice, sang all over the world, including in Liège, London, and New York.  He was particularly associated with the English National Opera, as he sang many roles and made numerous recordings with the company. Among the roles he was best known for were the title role of “Werther,” Don Ottavio in “Don Giovanni,” “Roméo et Juliette,” and most notably Alfredo in “La Traviata.”

It was Alfredo that he recorded with Sir Charles Mackerras and Valerie Masterson for EMI. He also recorded the work with Elizabeth Harwood. Both were done in English.

He recorded “L’incoronazione di Poppea” with Dame Janet Baker, also in English, as well as Massenet’s “Werther” with the English National Opera. He also recorded Offenbach’s “Robinson Crusoe” for Opera Rara.
