Obituary: Kathleen Cassello Passes Away At 58

By Francisco Salazar

Kathleen Cassello has passed away at the age of 58.

The Opera de Marseille, where she was very famous and sang extensively, announced her passing via Twitter.

Cassello made a name for herself after winning first prize in the Salzburg Mozart competition in 1985. She went on to tour extensively throughout Europe, Asia and North America. Cassello made her European debut as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” at the Hamburg Staatsoper, a role she would perform around the world more than 200 times.

She was known for her work in the Bel Canto repertoire and sang such roles as Bellini’s “I Puritani,” “La Sonnambula” and “I Capuleti e i Montecchi” as well as Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” and “Roberto Devereux.” She also sang many Verdi roles, including Leonora in “Il Trovatore” and Violetta in “La Traviata.”

But perhaps what she is most remembered for is for her tours of “The Three of Sopranos” alongside Kallen Esperian and Cynthia Lawrence. The three sopranos toured alongside Luciano Pavarotti in the 90s. While they never became as popular as the Three tenors, a number of videos are documented from the performances.
