Obituary: Bass Dennis Wilgenhof Passes Away At 44

Dennis Wilgenhof has died at the age of 44.

The Dutch bass was found dead on Tuesday at a hotel in Maastricht, where he taught at the local academy. According to early reports, the singer suffered a heart attack.

He was a member of the soloist’s ensemble of Oper Köln and Staatstheater Wiesbaden and he sang numerous leading roles including Osmin in “Entführung aus dem Serail,” Sarastro in “Die Zauberflöte,” Sparafucile in “Rigoletto,” and Padre Guardiano in “La Forza del Destino.”

Among the theater where he performed included the Teatro alla Scala, Oper Frankfurt, Salle Pleyel, Paris, Dutch National Opera and the Bayerische Staatsoper.

He also worked with many leading conductors include Kirill Petrenko, Daniele Gatti, Zubin Mehta, Sebastian Weigle, Edo de Waart, Jaap van Zweden, Markus Stenz, and Alain Altinoglu.

The bass had recently sung in Bernstein’s “Candide” in Koln and “Der Meistersinger von Nurnberg” at La Scala.

He left a number fo recordings including one of Wagner’s “Lohengrin” with Klaus Florian Vogt and Julius Röntgen’s “Aus Goethes Faust.”
