Nino Machaidze, Simon Keenlyside & The Figaro Trilogy Headline Grand Theatre de Genève 2017-18 Season

The Gran Theatre de Genève has announced its 2017-18 season.

The Three Figaro Operas

Geneve will present three operas from the life of Figaro, over three days. The series will begin with  Gioachino Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” followed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart “Le Nozze di Figaro and concluding with Elena Langer’s “Figaro Gets a Divorce.” The operas will run from Sept. 12 to the 24, 2017. Sam Brown will direct “Barbiere” while Tobias Richter will ghelm Mozart’s “Figaro.” Langer’s “Figaro” will be directed by David Pountney. The productions are co-productions with the Welsh National Opera.

Concerts

As is the case with every season, the company will present a series of operas in concert. It all kicks off with Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” on August 27, 2017, followed by Saint-Saens’ “Ascanio” on Nov. 24 and 26, 2017. The company will show Schumann’s oratorio “Szenen aus Goethes Faust” starring Markus Werba and John Relyea.

Productions

In addition to the Figaro trilogy, the company will offer a wide variety of repertoire. Joan Mompart’s “Figaro-Ci, Figaro-La” will be presented from Nov. 8 to the 15, 2017, as an introduction for young children.

Between Dec. 15, 2017 and Jan. 6, 2018 Strauss’ “The Gypsy Baron” will be shown to celebrate the New year. Marie-Ange Todorovitch stars with Stefan Blunier in the pit.

On Feb.1, 2018, Georges Lavaudant directs a new production of Gounod’s “Faust” with John Osborn in the title role and Jesus Lopez-Cobos conducting. The production runs through Feb 18.

Emma Dante directs a production of Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” and Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci.” “Cavalleria Rusticana” stars Oksana Volkova while Nino Machaidze and Diego Torre star in “Pagliacci.” The productions run from March 17 to the 29, 2018.

Purcell’s “King Arthur” gets a new production by Alain Maratrat and runs from April 26 to May 9, 2018.

David Bösch directs a new production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” starring Simon Keenlyside, Patrizia Ciofi, Ramón Vargas and Myrtò Papatanasiu. The opera runs from June 1 to 17, 2018.

Recitals 

The company will also showcase numerous recitals in Nina Stemme, Sonya Yoncheva, Mikhail Petrenko, Willard White, Dorothea Roschmann and Marie-Nicole Lemieux.
